Base64 to File Converter
Paste Base64 (or a data URI) and get the original file back. The decoder reads the file's signature to find out what it is - PDF, image, Office document, ZIP, audio, video, text - shows a preview where your browser can, and downloads it with the correct name and extension.
How to use the Base64 to File tool
- Paste the Base64 text or data URI, or open a .txt file that contains it.
- Check the detected type and the preview (images, PDF, audio, video, text and a hex view).
- Change the file name if you like and click Download.
Questions and answers
How does it know the file type?
Most file formats start with a fixed signature ("magic number"): PDF files start with %PDF, PNG with \x89PNG, ZIP with PK. The tool checks more than 30 signatures. A MIME type in a data URI is used too.
The type is unknown - what now?
The file may be in a format without a signature (for example plain binary data). Look at the hex view, then choose an extension yourself before downloading.
Can I open a Word document from Base64?
Yes. DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files are recognised and downloaded with the right extension; open them with your office program.
Is my data uploaded to a server?
No. Every conversion on this page runs inside your browser with JavaScript. Your text and files never leave your computer, which is why it also works for private keys, contracts and photos.
Is the tool free?
Yes, free without sign-up and without limits other than your computer's memory. The site is paid for by the small ads on the left and at the bottom.
