Questions and answers
What is Base64?
Base64 is a way to write any data - text, pictures, PDFs - using only 64 safe characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, + and /). It is used to put binary data inside e-mails, JSON, HTML, CSS and URLs, where raw bytes would break.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or secrets.
Why is my Base64 longer than the original?
Base64 writes every 3 bytes as 4 characters, so the result is about 33% larger (plus line breaks if you turn them on).
Is my data uploaded to a server?
No. Every conversion on this page runs inside your browser with JavaScript. Your text and files never leave your computer, which is why it also works for private keys, contracts and photos.
Is the tool free?
Yes, free without sign-up and without limits other than your computer's memory. The site is paid for by the small ads on the left and at the bottom.
